A tinny rendition of Johnny B. Goode blared from the diner's cheap radio. Over it, the boy could hear the cook drumming along to it on the counter.
This is probably the worst meal I've ever ate... he thought, swallowing the mystery meat.
As he went to take another bite, the waitress walked up to his booth. “Enjoying the meal?” she asked.

No one else had woken up. I stood up as slow as I could manage and grabbed my quiver. I slung it over my back, grabbed the crossbow, and loaded it.
I stepped over my comrades' bodies towards the back of the wagon.
If the wolves saw fit, they could probably jump right into here.
Which means this place provides no advantage. I sighed. My crossbow was made mostly of wood, but she'd survive some close combat.

One peeked came up behind me and peeked out the front of the wagon. “We're... where, exactly?” he asked.
I looked around. His question was valid; We were at the base of a mountain, surrounded by trees. Hardly a remarkable location. Oh well. “Our new home.” I said.
“Six days of travel, two of which spent trailed by goblins... to reach this?”
I nodded.
